TURN 6

Environment Description

Charbiss is the second planet that orbits around the star Firiope. The surface of planet Charbiss is a barren wasteland, exposed to high amounts of radiation due to having a extremely thin atmosphere. Almost all of Charbiss' Oxygen and Hydrogen is used to form the water within its caverns.
Deep underneath the surface however, an enormous network of interconnecting caverns exist. These caverns vary from the size of a large city, to tiny little tunnels that only a mole could fit through. The caverns are almost entirely filled with water. The water has a gradient in temperature, being around 80C at the bottom and 30C at the top due to the high amount of geothermal vents that scatter the underwater caverns floor. Charbiss has currents that are caused by convection, the hot water rises to the top, then as it cools is forced back down again to start the cycle again.

SPECIES FOR TEAM “IAOOI”
Eyesight: base 4 +2 (50% support) = 6.
Sexual reproduction: base 1 +2 (50% support) = 7, capped to 6.

Vision Lytracker (Axeritrace Oculus)

Changes:
The Vision Lytracker has gained a new sense. Certain cells developed a mutation which made them sensitive to some radiation on the electromagnetic spectrum. Eventually the Lytrackers brain developed the ability to use this information, and thus Lyutrackers can now see light. These eyes of the Lytackers are in long strips along their torso, to get a good view of the whole world. The reason they have eyes on their sides and not forward facing is because they use these eyes to see where the dangers are, instead of using them for hunting. The dangers are the Serques, as they will impale and kill the Lytracker if they come too close.
Lytrackers can sexually reproduce now, using the process of Meiosis to produce male (sperm) and female (egg) cells. The process is extremely similar to human reproduction, aside from one thing: the females can produce infinite numbers of eggs, compared to human females that have a set amount. This means that females can continually produce clusters upon clusters of eggs, as long as they have males to breed with (and there are no shortage of males).
Appearance:
Small multicellular carbon-based life forms that look similar in shape to small dolphins/fish. Each organism is around 9cm. Has four fins on its head that it uses to stabilise itself while swimming. It has a long tentacle underneath its mouth. It has strips of eyes along its sides.
Notable Features:
Reproduces sexually by males mating with the females and the females consequently producing large clusters of eggs. Developing embryos use a combination of Thermosynthesis and nutrients found within the egg to grow.
Has a complicated nervous system which feels pressure, temperature and pain.
It has a web of veins that use convection to make the blood spread around the body, using an organ that generates heat to do this.
On its face there is an organ that senses vibrations and converts them into sound. They can emit high pitched sounds and construct a mental image of where things are due to their very good ears. They have strips of eyes along its sides that have a 360° view of the world.
Has four stabilisation fins around its face, and a dolphin-like tail fin which it moves up and down to swim with.
Has a series of organs devoted to digesting food, this includes two stomachs that connect to their own seperate intestine, and a bowel that the two intestines dump the digested food into.
Diet:
Developing embryos are producers, (Thermosynthesis). Uses heat to produce energy. The adults are Carnivores. Eats other organisms to produce energy.
Habitat:
The geothermal depths of the caverns.

SPECIES FOR TEAM “METAMORPHIC MAGIC”
Electricity sensing organ: base 4 +2 (50% support) = 6.
Sexual reproduction: base 2 +2 (50% support) = 4.

Electrick Woith (Wothinium Electrixxus)

Changes:
These Woiths have developed cells located throughout their skin that are extremely sensitive to electrons, and are able to sense minute electrical changes from the outside environment. These electricity sensors are so precise that they can sense the electrical transfers that occur inside of other organisms (such as Lytrackers that may be lurking outside of their burrows) and can now tell where other organisms are because of that.
Woiths have gained sexual reproduction, however it is slightly different from what were used to. Woiths have only one gender that produces one form of sex cell. These sex cells have one copy of each of the Woiths chromosomes, randomly selected from a parent cell that has the full set of the chromosomes. These sex cells are released in certain breeding seasons, around the geothermal vents. The cells release pheromones that attract other cells toward them, and the cells eventually meet up. Three sex cells combine to form a “full” cell, with the complete sets of chromosomes donated by three parents. This cell attaches to nearby rocks surrounding the geothermal vents, and starts growing, eventually turning into an adult Woith.
Appearance:
Small multicellular carbon-based life forms that resemble worms and grow around the geothermal vents and deposits of iron. Each worm is around 10cm long when fully stretched, and about 5cm when fully shrunken. It's body has a coating of rust on it. Has a series of paddles on either side of its body.
Notable Features:
Reproduces sexually using a complicated system where three parents donate their sex cells to form a new organism with a full set of chromosomes, where they have three different copies of each chromosome (one from each parent). Resembles a worm.
Has an organ that crushes rocks to get at their minerals. Has three glands around their mouth that spit acid. Has cells in their skin that can sense minute changes in electricity in the surrounding environment.
Have muscles that allow them to expand and contract so they can hide inside of their burrows. Can swim using a similar way that snakes move on land. They have a series of paddles on either side of their long bodies, which allow them to swim quite quickly. These paddles have a cluster of small hairs on the end; these hairs sense the direction of the current and if they are touching an object. Has mitochondria that provide them with a lot of energy when they Thermosynthesize and use Chemolithotrophy.
Can convert vibrations into sound using a special organ; however they can only tell the difference between large and small vibrations.
Diet:
Producer (Thermosynthesis).
Uses heat to produce energy.
Producer (Chemolithotrophy)
Uses Iron and Water to produce energy. The water is split using a chemical reaction to produce oxygen and hydrogen. The oxygen and iron combines to make Fe2O3 (rust), which also creates energy in the process. It then uses the rust to build its armour and expels hydrogen as waste.
They are also opportunistic carnivores, and will happily digest any edible organisms that they find lying on the sediment.
Habitat:
The geothermal depths of the caverns.
Conservation Status:
NT


SPECIES FOR TEAM “THREE STAR”
Eyesight: base 5 +2 (50% support) = 7, capped to 6.
Acid resistance: base 5 +2 (50% support) = 7, capped to 6.

Lantern Serque (Serartiaes Laternnae)

Changes:
Lantern Serques have developed special cells that are sensitive to a certain spectrum of electromagnetic radiation, thus allowing them to see with these cells. They have also developed an organ dedicated to visual processing, which uses the information collected by these eye cells and constructs an image with them. Serques use these eyes to see potential prey, and attack them with their branches if they get close enough. However the downsides to this strategy are these:
1) The light produced by the Serques is not very bright, and can’t pierce too far into the darkness before it dissipates. At most it can stretch a few metres in radius.
2) Other organisms can see this light too, and choose to stay away from it.
However, due to their recently developed acid resistance, Serques now prey upon unlucky Narquis, and are managing to survive, although their populations are falling.
Appearance:
Small multicellular carbon-based life forms that grow from a clump into spiny clusters around deposits of Sulfur. Has bioluminescent (aqua coloured) dots on their spines. Each organism is around 15 - 20cm tall.
Notable Features:
Reproduces using singe-celled spores that float through the caverns and find new vents to grow around.
Has a primitive form of respiration.
Is bioluminescent, producing aqua-coloured light from small dots scattered around its spines. Has small patches of light sensitive cells on their skin, which connects to an organ dedicated to processing this information and coming up with an image of the surrounding world.
Has two forms of roots: large, stable, acid secreting roots and the tiny, rapid growing mycelium-like absorbing roots. The first use Sulfuric acid to dissolve Sulfur deposits and the latter absorb this dissolved Sulfur to fuel their metabolism.
Has large spines that deter predators. If an organism is impaled upon these spines, a paralysis toxin is released into their bodies and then they are dissolved and absorbed by small roots. These spines are controlled by small muscles contained within the spines. Their skin is acid resistant.
Diet:
Producer (Chemolithotrophy). Uses Sulfur and Water to produce energy. The water is split using a chemical reaction to produce oxygen and hydrogen. The oxygen and Sulfur combines to make Sulfur Dioxide, which also creates energy in the process. More water and hydrogen is added to create H2SO4 (Sulfuric acid), which is released through the roots to dissolve the surrounding Sulfur and thus get more ingredients to make energy. The acid harmlessly disperses, usually forming back into water and Sulfur.
They are also opportunistic carnivores, and will happily digest an organism that is trapped by their spines.
Habitat:
The geothermal depths of the caverns.

SPECIES FOR TEAM “FREMULON”
Improved consumption of matter: base 3 +5 (100% support) = 8, capped to 6.
Silica Narquis (Narcitias Silicoid)

Changes:
Narquis have seen a dramatic size increase, due to their highly improved ability to consume matter. They now use their acid to dissolve silicon and incorporate into their bodies. This makes their bodies slightly more brittle, but it also means that they are much less nutritious to predators as no other species use silicon in their bodies currently.
Appearance:
Small multicellular carbon and silicon-based life forms that form into the shape of corkscrews. Each corkscrew has a series of growths on the outside that resemble spoons, which catch the water currents and make the organism spin much faster. Each corkscrew is around 7cm.
Notable Features:
Narquis have two forms of reproductive cells, the released cells (sperm) and the kept cells (eggs). The eggs are kept in microscopic ‘pores’ in the skin, and are safe in there until a sperm released from another Narquis joins with it and creates a new Narquis. These baby Narquis take a little while to grow, and eventually leave the parent organism once big enough.
They also have a secondery way of reproduction: Reproduces using it's discarded spoons. These elongate and slowly grow into the shape of a corkscrew.
Has spoons on the outside that make it spin faster. These spoons can feel pressure and can use muscles to swivel them around the get more current. Narquis are able to drop these spoons if they get stuck, in a similar ways to some varieties of lizard drop their tails.
Narquis secrete an acid that dissolves the Lytrackers skin.
Diet:
Producer (Kinetosynthesis). Uses the kinetic energy of the currents to produce energy for itself.
Habitat:
The geothermal currents of the caverns.
Conservation Status:
LC


OVERVIEW
The rivalry between the Lytrackers and the Woiths continues, with each species evolving new ways to hunt/evade the other. Serques are doing more badly, and have become endangered because other species are able to sense them much more easily. They are managing to survive (barely) off of catching the occasional Narquis. Narquis have seen a size increase, but remain larely the same as their anscestors.
