Creature Creator
I have noticed that the export/import files for creatures are just text files with a bunch of numbers. I was thinking of making a creature creator but without figuring out what these numbers mean, it would be impossible. Of course, I could always just do it myself, but I thought it would be a good idea to ask around to see if anyone has already cracked the code, or already made the Creature Creator.

Re: Creature Creator
Saw it but I haven't cracked because I don't think it's final. It's too linear and Quasar has said as much and the next version sounds to be rather different.
Certainly easily enough to update your program for the new code if you want to get started now though. Visualizer and GUI will be the hard part.

Nyyyyyeeehh... I can't do it. I can't keep quiet anymore.
As much as I'd love to see someone actually crack the save file code, it'd be cruel of me to "fail to mention" that the game does, in fact, already have a creature editor.
A few disclaimers as to why I've stayed quiet and haven't advertised it...
- it will not be in the final game.
- it's strictly debug functionality, ie. not very user friendly and crashes occasionally (it was originally created to test different configurations of body plans and allow us to create marketing screenshots)
- it makes very apparent the limitations of the creature engine and the lack of content for some items. Be warned, the game feels a lot more 'alpha' after you try to make something with it.
- it occasionally consumes the souls of the innocent to fuel it's eternal rage against all living things.
So, if you still want to play with Satans Creature Editor, here's what you do:
Press "Shift-G" to unlock it.
Select a creature to start from.
Click the Genetic Engineering button.
Good luck!

Why not plan to release it eventually? People will just hand edit genomes or write their own program if you don't.
Re: Creature Creator
My opinion on this would be to just make the creature editor an easter egg of sorts. As for now, only the people who've stumbled upon it accidentially, and the people in this thread, know of it. If you keep it that way, it'll make for a nice surprise!

It sounds cool indeed !
At this point, we shouldn't be surprised by anything nature does. She's like a meth addict whose drug-fueled rampages unfold in slow motion and span millions of years.
