Also do you have any idea what kind of environment the insects were collected from, that might be somewhat useful, and any more information about those Gil like extensions?

A local compost bin. I know that my TA said she would get my professor to take a look, and he is a bug guy, so hopefully he should know.20 characters! wrote: ↑Thu Apr 27, 2017 1:32 amAlso do you have any idea what kind of environment the insects were collected from, that might be somewhat useful, and any more information about those Gil like extensions?

That....doesn't sound like the kind of insect I would expect to find in such environment, which only makes this even stranger, unless the damage was extensive enough to distort it's appearance.Prudentia wrote: ↑Thu Apr 27, 2017 1:47 amA local compost bin. Yeah, though the big one was in remarkably good condition, especially compared to the others, who were moderately to heavily damaged. Though even the most damaged were clearly the demon bug from hell.20 characters! wrote: ↑Thu Apr 27, 2017 2:29 amThat....doesn't sound like the kind of insect I would expect to find in such environment, which only makes this even stranger, unless the damage was extensive enough to distort it's appearance.Prudentia wrote: ↑Thu Apr 27, 2017 1:47 amA local compost bin. Have you tried dissecting it? Perhaps stomach contents might give you a clue?Prudentia wrote: ↑Thu Apr 27, 2017 2:31 amYeah, though the big one was in remarkably good condition, especially compared to the others, who were moderately to heavily damaged. Were they found specifically in Association, that is next to our attached to any of the other insects?

Too small and no tools. On two of the smaller ones, there were ticks/mites (Acari) present, but they may have just been how they settled in the alcohol, the ticks were nearly as big as them.20 characters! wrote: ↑Thu Apr 27, 2017 2:38 amHave you tried dissecting it? Kind of, but there are two rows of spines on the dorsal, Sinistral and Dextral aspects, so six per segment, the spines are about .75-2 segments long, and they do not have any long extension off their body. Segments are also completely around the body, no breaks. Segments also did not overlap, a factor that made me lean pupae rather than armor.

I'm sorry that I wasn't able to be of much help, those were all the things I could think of.Prudentia wrote: ↑Thu Apr 27, 2017 10:21 amKind of, but there are two rows of spines on the dorsal, Sinistral and Dextral aspects, so six per segment, the spines are about .75-2 segments long, and they do not have any long extension off their body.
